Useful information on Colombia
General: Colombia, officially the Republic of Colombia, is a constitutional republic in northwestern South America. With a population of over 45 million people, Colombia has the 29th largest population in the world and the second largest in South America, after Brazil. Colombia has the third largest population of any Spanish-speaking country in the world, after Mexico and Spain. International telephone country code: +57, Internet country code: .co, Electricity voltage: 120V frequency 60 Hz, Electrical outlet: Type A North American/Japanese 2-blade, Time zone: -5 GMT (Colombia does not use daylight saving time)
Languages: Spanish is the official language of Colombia. Wayuu, Paez, Embera, Romani are other languages spoken on a regular basis in Colombia.
Climate: The climate of Colombia is tropical with wet weather. Summer is the main season for rain, although generally it is wet all year round. The climate is very warm and tropical on the coast and in the north, with a rainy season from May to November. The low coastal areas have high temperatures and high humidity, with little seasonal variation during the year. The variation in temperature results primarily from variation in elevation. It is cooler in the upland areas and cold in the mountains. Temperatures range from very hot at sea level to relatively cold at higher elevations. Bogota is always spring-like with an average annual temperature of 15 Celsius, but the daily variation in temperature is from 5 Celsius at night to 17 during the day.
Major cities: Bogotá (capital and largest city), Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla, Cartagena, Cúcuta, Soledad, Bucaramanga
Departments/districts: Colombia is divided into 32 departments and one capital district, Bogota, which is treated as a department. Bogota also serves as the capital of the department of Cundinamarca (capital city in brackets):

Taxis: Taxi services in Colombia are relatively inexpensive, but it is always safer to have someone (the hotel or a restaurant) call for a taxi rather than hailing one on the street. The taxi company will tell you the number of the taxi that they will dispatch to pick you up and you should check that the number matches. Taking a taxi from Bogota international airport is relatively safe. You get a voucher from the appropriate booth and tell the coordinator your destination. Also, most hotels have airport transfer services and will arrange to meet you if you ask them. In some coastal cities taxis do not have meters, so you should ask to see the chart with the fares to the area of town you going to or you could be charged a lot more. It is not customery to tip the driver, so taxi drivers will appear surprised if you give them even a few pesos extra.
Currency: The Colombian Peso is the currency in Colombia/Columbia (COP). The symbol for COP can be written Col$. The Colombian Peso is divided into 100 centavos. The approximate exchange rate on 12th February 2011 was: 1 Euro = 2520 COP, 1 US$ = 1860 COP, 1 GB£ = 2980 COP.
Money: US dollars and Euros are widely exchangeable, everywhere. GB Pounds are not readily accepted for exchange in banks; although some money exchange offices do accept UK currency, the exchange rate is not favourable. There are ATMs throughout the main cities and some will allow cash withdrawals using Visa, MasterCard or Cirrus. American Express and Diners Club are less accepted. American Express and Citicorp traveller's cheques are the most commonly accepted and can be exchanged at banks, hotels or bureaux de change. Cartagena and Bogota are the most visited cities by tourists and they both can accommodate all foreign tourists' banking needs. Currency restrictions: The import and export of local and foreign currencies is unlimited, but amounts exceeding the equivalent of US$10,000 must be declared.
Casinos: The minimum legal age to gamble in Colombia is 18. Besides casino gambling, betting on horse racing, bingo and lottery are also permitted in Colombia.
